The second annual FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) Fest will take place as part of Big Data Ignite this year. Some highlights:
• State of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel will speak on the Michigan Freedom of Information Act
• Grand Valley alumnus Marisa Kwiatkowski, who was part of the team of Indy Star reporters who broke the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal story, will lead a hands-on session for those people who want to learn how to submit effective requests.
• A day-long local and international water data hackathon (led by Mike Morisy, co-founder of non-profit MuckRock, and longtime investigative journalist Matt Kauffman) will bring together journalists and computer scientists from the United States, Africa, and Europe. Prizes are available for the winners.
