A narrow view of data science restricts the workflows of data scientists to ETL pipelines, exploratory data analysis, and model development and refinement. By contrast, data scientists at IDEO are considered human-centered designers who use data as a medium for design. This approach, which often has data scientists working on deeply collaborative and interdisciplinary project teams, makes it possible to design whether the client has ‘Big’ data, ‘Little’ data, or – as is quite often the case – no data at all.
In this talk, Chris will describe IDEO’s approach and walk through examples of work that demonstrate its impact: an accelerated and improved design process for data-driven products and services. He hopes you will take away a new perspective and understanding of what it might mean to practice data science with or without data, as well as concrete tools and exercises you can use in your own workflows to make the results of your work more useful and meaningful to others.
