The internet of things has come. It is integrated into our personal lives. From my phone, I start my car on a cold morning and dial down the temperature on the thermostat to conserve energy. When I get home from work, I tell my sound system to play my favorite music and place an order for paper towels on Amazon. At Steelcase, though, we are asking a new question of the internet of things: “Can we push IoT into the plant, all the way down to shop floor machines, to help us realize improvement in manufacturing and operations?” In this talk I will discuss our journey into the Industrial Internet of Things – from vision, to architecture, to analytics – and share some of our early successes.
We have leveraged descriptive analytics to locate and execute on possible areas of improvement on a height-adjustable desking line, resulting in increased efficiency and reduction in direct labor cost. We have completed cycle time analyses to replace traditional, line-side time studies and predicted cycle times on the basis of product characteristics as first steps in more accurate schedule-building and (future) dynamic scheduling. In addition to case studies, I will explain how we are using diverse technologies such as Kepware, Microsoft’s Azure IoT suite, R, and Tableau to achieve our goals of transforming operations with IoT.
